CITY OF THE DEAD

By Joanne Tolson

It sits on the far side of the Nile.

The living and the dead reside

Side by side

Oblivious each of the other.

Past meets future present.

Pyramids shadow the land

As the wind reveals the face of the ancient man.

They are coming back to haunt us.

We are host to their souls.

They arise from the desert each night.

Hear the ancient chant across the land.

Their souls battle on

Like the gods in the constellations above.
