Aveg Nob Was

By Jessica Howe

Aveg Nob was a phenomenon

A lady of some stature

She'd passed the test of the painted house full of strangers

Could eliminate pi from her equations

Aveg Nob knew herself

Who are you, they asked when she came to court

Curtsey: I am me

A dangerous answer in the house of the King

But he was amused by her doings and let her talk on

Aveg Nob survived

They said that she'd crossed the ocean once

That she'd beaten the sphinx over there at chess

That she knew how to spin gold and knit spiderwebs

Aveg Nob was a mystery

Did we ever know her well?

She was tall, with dark hair some say, others tell of rippling blond locks

Some say she was plump and cheery, others dark and obtuse.

I met Aveg Nob once

I was in the park, sitting beneath my favorite willow

I was upset about something and she came to me

And she told me to cry, because that was important

Because she never could

Aveg Nob is in my memory

I do not recall what she looked like either

I only remember her words that day

How they broke my heart and mended it at the same time.

Aveg Nob was powerful.
