OCT 23 - NOV 29, 1997
The exhibition doesn't seek to prove nor question the validity of the existence of UFO's and aliens coming here as shown in the art, but to present it as a vital phenomenon of our time. The show reveals the intensity of belief of some of the artists who present a startlingly different world view as a result of their experiences.
Betty Ann Luca began drawing and painting as a means to communicate the nature of her abduction experiences. Her extensive contact was revealed over years by hypnotic regression documented by UFO researcher Ray E. Fowler in a series of 4 books including The Andreasson Affair, and The Watchers. She believes she was chosen to communicate the long term interest in our planet, and the changes in the nature of alien contact in our time. Among the strange images are pictures showing alien involvement in reproduction and child development of hybrid infants nurtured in capsules, the result of past abductions. Other artists such as David Huggins and Chuck Rak (The Allagash Abduction) also deal with abduction and aliens' interest in human reproduction in compelling paintings.
The show includes artists that take the UFO phenomenon in other directions in leaps of imagination. Gene Watson, an inventor, has spent much of his life developing ionic propulsion systems to power flying saucer prototypes that hovered over sites in Texas. His efforts are documented in photographs, diagrams, and models. Although Betty Ann Luca has had interest in her drawings of spacecraft interiors from NASA engineers, that official recognition has eluded Gene Watson's inventions and the artist, Ionel Talpazan, who created detailed diagrams of UFO interiors combining art and science. Ionel Talpazan has gone from selling his UFO drawings on the streets to having his art collected by L'Aracine for the Art Brut Collection of the French National Museum. Talpazan's UFO art has received critical acclaim as well as art collector sales and museum exhibitions.
Sightings of UFO's and the speculation of other life in the Universe has become a consuming passion of our time in many parts of the Earth. The flying saucer image assuming the position of a cultural icon of the late 20th century.
