Check out their website - http://www.etranfinatawa.com - to read about and see this truly spectacular band. You can hear music at MySpace and see video at YouTube.
Etran Finatawa were nominated for the 2007 BBC Radio 3 awards for World Music in the Newcomer Category.
"Electric guitars and traditional instrument sent wine like old friends as rustic call-and-response vocals stir up the desert heat. Comparisons aside, this debut is dynamite." Global Rhythm, Sep. 2006
"Introducing Etran Finatawa is a musical experience full of life in a desert environment that is seemingly lifeless." Inside World Music
"Just listen to the guitar solos on A Dunya and you'll be instantly seduced by the beauty of this music which has its roots in the West African country of Niger. Marvel at Iledeman and in the driving 12-bar structure you can hear the real roots of American blues." Sydney Morning Herald - August 2006
"It seems Etran Finatawa are on a mission of far greater urgency than just making us dance to their gorgeous grooves." The Independent UK, 31 July 2006
"Two groups of desert nomads meld their music in the sparse, spellbinding songs of Etran Finatawa, a band from Niger. Etran Finatawa, which means "stars of tradition," played its mesmerizing United States debut at Symphony Space on Friday in a World Music Institute concert. It was easy to tell who was who. Three Wodaabe musicians wore long, almost rectangular robes, hats with a single feather pointing skyward and white stripes of face paint down their foreheads and noses. Three Tuareg musicians wore ornately embroidered burnooses and robes." New York Times April, 2008
"Lately the modern Sahara sounds like the Mississippi Delta of the Twenties: a font of world-class musicians exorcising serious blues." Rolling Stone May 2008

"Attendees at live shows can expect an experience that incorporates country (multi-instrumentalist Max Johnston wields, depending on the song, a banjo, a fiddle, a mandolin or a dobro) with a good bit of rock'n'roll and traces of zydeco (Claude Bernard plays accordion on most of the songs), bluegrass, and folk." The Daily Texan
"The Gourds bring their iconoclastic country/folk/Tex-Mex/Cajun rock to the stage with tunes from their album Heavy Ornamentals and crowd-pleasing favorites from their early years." pbs.org Austin City Limits
"The Gourds are a good-time, honky tonkin' band with enough quirk and underground appeal to more than earn the 'alternative' in 'alternative country-rock band.'" allmusic.com
"The Gourds are something like a potluck chili of indigenous American music, traditional and otherwise; a three-day folk festival rolled up into 50 concise minutes, then given an insulin shot of weatherbeaten rock'n'roll." blogcritics.org

Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas
"The musical chemistry between Scottish fiddle legend Alasdair Fraser and young cello ace Natalie Haas is a rare, felicitous thing". Boston Herald
"Alasdair Fraser is among the most accomplished Scottish fiddlers alive today. He has made numerous excellent CDs: notably with Paul Machlis and Skyedance. Then he formed a duet with the brilliant, classically trained cellist Natalie Haas and their sublime debut album Fire & Grace won the 2004 Scots Trad Album of the Year award."FROOTS magazine January 2008
Friends of Bob is a not-for-profit cooperative that brings great music to Lafayette. Please consider becoming a dues-paying Friend of Bob
2008 dues are $10, though if you 'd like to donate more, that would be great. (Since we are a registered 501 [c][3] organization, donations above the $10 level can be tax-deductible.) Before each show, we publish a newsletter giving background information -- membership dues pay for the printing and mailing of these newsletters. Plus, our affordable admission prices in small venues sometimes fail to cover expenses, so membership contributions provide us with a safety net for such occasions. Friends of Bob is a not-for-profit all-volunteer organization that works to bring outstanding live music to Lafayette. A membership form can be found by clicking on the How Can You Help button at the top of this page.
