Andromeda

By David Thiry

She caries stars in her eyes.
How long? So long the galaxy
Has turned three times since
She last saw light. The lady
Fears falling in an endless
Index of spirals from the sky
To the last star, being created
Anew there, taking the stars
From her eyes, holding them
In her hand like so many dice
And casting them back in the sky
Forming new constellations: see
There? A dove, a coiling of snakes
Flames within dust that's left
Over. In her eyes now see new tears
Falling like meteors to planets
That bear her name
Tears still as stars.
