Princess of the Morn By Karl

It seems when I look within your eyes I see long-forgotten foreign skies Where we walked along a sunken shore That has left our world forevermore. And you, a princess of that morn Took time for me, but a peasant born, And we saw things beyond all caste That would through time eternal last. You in a palace of gold did live, And yet had always time to give To me each morn upon that shore That rose and fell and was no more. You listened as I sang my song Of love; sometimes you'd sing along, As if our eyes would not diverge. You let my youthful heartbeat surge Until yours too would beat along To my hopeless youthful lover's song, As if we would never have to part As our future lives the stars would chart. Your father, lord of all the land Knew not our love upon the sand; For, had he known—a kindly king— He may have let our young hearts sing, And let our young love make us one, As, in those days, could still be done. But, knowing not, what he thought best Was to send you to a kingdom in the west, An alliance made to bring us peace, So that long-lasting wars would cease. But though these worthy dreams came true It ended love for me and you. And though in time Atlantis fell, Each of us had tales to tell, When in centuries deep we chanced to meet And one might kneel at the other's feet. But through long time there'd never be A time of love for you and me. In one lifetime I'd be high of birth, With family that could not see your worth. In another you'd a noble be A likewise curse for you and me. In another, you young and I'd be old, My hair of silver, yours of gold. And in the next we would reverse— I'd be young, your age would curse. In other times but one would see That through all time we were meant to be. Perchance some day we both can meet With neither at the other's feet, Born equal, both of caste and age. The curse on us will cease to rage. I do not know what's caused this thing, Yet still can make our hearts both sing. I pray we both can be as one Before eternity is done. It seems to me too much a crime To separate us for all time. I know we both can live as one Before the darkening of the sun.
